Valentino Uomo Born In Roma Intense

Valentino Garavani opened his couture house in Rome in 1960, and Rome has been the brand's entire fragrance argument ever since. The Born in Roma line launched at the end of the 2010s with the city written into the name and the bottle, and Valentino's own copy for the Intense calls it a tribute to Rome and its sunsets, a celebration of a night in the eternal city. The pyramidal flacon is modelled on Roman architecture and studded with the Rockstud, the pyramid stud that became a Valentino fashion signature and which the house explicitly links to the studded doors and walls of Rome itself.

The composition is short and confident. Valentino names three things: vanilla, lavandin and vetiver. Lavandin rather than lavender matters; it is the coarser, more camphorous hybrid, and it gives the opening a clean, almost barbershop snap instead of a soft herbal one. Vanilla comes in almost immediately underneath, and this is where the Intense earns its name, because the vanilla here is dense, boozy and slightly smoky rather than sweet and creamy. Vetiver holds the base and stops the whole thing turning into dessert, adding a dry, rooty, faintly earthy bitterness. Broader listings describe it in the same three-part shape, which tells you how deliberately stripped back it is. Valentino does not name a perfumer on its product page, so no attribution should be assumed.

This is the current template for a contemporary masculine crowd-pleaser: sweet, dark, groomed, unsubtle. It is at its best after dark and in cool air. A Highveld spring evening flatters it; midsummer heat pushes the vanilla forward until it can feel heavy-handed. It is very much a going-out fragrance rather than a working one.

Performance is the reason people buy it. Expect nine to twelve hours on skin, strong projection for the first two to three, and noticeable residue on clothing the next day. That is more than most eaux de parfum deliver and it demands a light hand: two sprays covers an evening.
