Vetiver Sensuel

Vetiver is the most-used woody material in men's perfumery and one of the hardest to make interesting, because the raw material already smells finished. Mancera's approach in Vetiver Sensuel, from 2020, is to keep the vetiver dominant and change what surrounds it rather than what it is. The house summarises it in one line: powerful vetiver blended with floral and spicy notes for a sensual, balanced fragrance.

The opening is a hard citrus hit, lime and lemon and bergamot and orange with a pepper edge, and it is sharper than most vetiver fragrances allow themselves to be. Underneath it sits mint. That mint is the trick of the composition. It keeps the top green and cold well past the point where the citrus would normally have burned away, and it hands over to the vetiver cleanly rather than leaving a gap. Mancera also puts orchid in the heart, which sounds decorative on paper but reads as a soft, faintly creamy floralcy that rounds off vetiver's sharpest edges.

The base is vetiver, amber, oakmoss, woody notes and white musk. It is earthy without being dirty, closer to damp soil and roots than to smoke, and the oakmoss adds a mineral bitterness that keeps it dry right to the end. Mancera classifies it as Woody rather than Oriental, which is the right call and unusual for this house.

It is a daytime fragrance and a warm-weather one, and it is one of the few things in the Mancera catalogue you could wear to a Highveld office in November without causing a problem. It is nominally shared and genuinely so.

Performance is strong but more measured than the house's oud-based work: eight to ten hours with moderate projection, which for a green vetiver is very good indeed, since most of them fade to nothing inside four. Sold as an eau de parfum, in the 120ml flacon and a 60ml. Two to three sprays is sensible, and the citrus-mint opening is loud for twenty minutes before it settles considerably.
