Yves Saint Laurent released Opium in 1977 and it caused a genuine scandal, for the name, the advertising and the sheer weight of the thing. Black Opium, launched in 2014, borrowed the lineage and almost nothing else. Where the original was a dense spicy oriental, Black Opium was built around coffee, and it is not an exaggeration to say it created a category: the coffee gourmand that has dominated feminine perfumery ever since. Almost every coffee-and-vanilla fragrance on a shelf today is answering this one. YSL keeps its published copy loose, describing the fragrance's identity as a coffee floral signature when it introduces the flankers built from it. The full structure is documented consistently across independent references rather than on the house's own product page: orange blossom and pink pepper at the top, coffee and jasmine in the heart, vanilla, patchouli and cedar at the base. The pink pepper fizzes briefly in wear, then the coffee arrives, dark and roasted and slightly bitter, and locks onto the vanilla underneath. Jasmine and orange blossom keep it from becoming a dessert; patchouli and cedar give the drydown a dry, slightly earthy backbone. The whole thing is sweet, but it is sweet with an edge, and that edge is why it has lasted. It is a night fragrance. It suits cold air and it suits going out, so a Cape winter evening flatters it, while Highveld December heat can make the coffee-vanilla combination feel airless. It reads young and confident rather than formal, and it is not an office fragrance unless applied with real restraint. Performance is one of its selling points. Eight hours or more is standard, the opening two project strongly, and a vanilla-musk skin scent persists overnight on clothing. One or two sprays is enough. YSL has built an extensive family around it, and those flankers are separate compositions rather than stronger versions of the same juice, so check the exact name if you are replacing a bottle you already know. The composition is commonly credited to a team of four perfumers: Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Black Opium is a bold, unapologetic gourmand that leads with roasted coffee and bitter almond before settling into a warm vanilla-patchouli base anchored by cashmere wood — it's sweet, but never cloying. The pink pepper and orange blossom opening keeps things from feeling too heavy straight away, giving it a bright spark before the darker, creamier heart takes over. It's a heavy sillage fragrance with serious longevity, so a light hand on the trigger is genuinely good advice here, especially in warmer months — this one is built for autumn and winter evenings when you want your scent to linger long after you've left. If you're drawn to confident, sensual fragrances that sit somewhere between a coffee shop and a late-night cocktail bar, this is squarely in your wheelhouse.
