The house dates its own beginning to Paris in 2008 and calls itself a family collaboration; Pierre Montale is the name usually attached to it. The whole catalogue makes more sense once you know it. Montale had already built a reputation as a master of oriental perfumery, and Mancera is where that knowledge got a French finish: the same raw materials, blended tighter, with more polish and less rawness than the tradition they come from. Aoud Exclusif is one of the clearest examples in the range.

Mancera's own description is short. A refined and powerful oud, enhanced by vibrant spices and velvety amber, with leathery accents unfolding into a sensual warmth. The published note list is equally spare: rose, violet and patchouli leaves over leather, Nepalese oud, amber, vanilla and white musk.

What it actually smells like is a rose-oud, the oldest pairing in Middle Eastern perfumery, built the French way. Saffron and cumin give the opening a dry, faintly leathery bite. Bulgarian rose comes through within minutes, jammy but not sweet, and the violet underneath is what keeps it from collapsing into a straight attar. The oud itself is clean, with no barnyard and no medicinal sourness, and it settles into a warm resinous amber base that runs for the rest of the day.

This is evening wear and cool-weather wear. It suits a winter function in Johannesburg or a Cape dinner in July far better than a summer braai. Applied heavily in heat it becomes overwhelming, and Mancera fragrances do not need any help in that department.

On performance, this is where the house built its reputation. Reckon on ten to twelve hours of skin life, heavy projection across the first three, and survival through a wash cycle on a shirt. Two sprays is the correct dose for most people and three is a lot. The house bottles this at 120ml with a smaller 60ml alongside, and most buyers end up with the large one even though this concentration makes the small bottle last.
