Black Line

The Line collection is Mancera's most restrained presentation - sleek, straight-sided bottles, no ornament, the house's phrase for it being an understated and timeless fragrance signature. Black Line arrived in 2013, five years into the Paris house's existence, and it is the collection's dark centre. Mancera's own copy sets the scene as starry nights, smoky wood and amber, with vibrant spices opening before the whole thing softens on skin.

It begins spicy and slightly abrasive - a peppery, resinous rush that lasts perhaps fifteen minutes and does not flatter everyone. What follows is better. Rose and leather come up together, wrapped in patchouli leaf and amber, and this is the part that gives Black Line its character: a dry, dusty rose sitting inside soft leather rather than perched on top of it. Mancera lists Indian sandalwood and white musk in the base alongside guaiac wood, and that trio is what makes the drydown feel powdery and warm instead of merely dark.

It is a rose-leather in the classic sense, and if you know that genre you know it is worn by everyone regardless of what the label says. It is a cold-weather scent - a Karoo night, a Cape winter evening, anything with a coat involved. In summer it becomes a heavy proposition very quickly.

No nose is published for Black Line. Pierre Montale is the name most often attached to it, which given his role at the house is plausible rather than confirmed. Treat it as commonly attributed.

Performance is what you buy Mancera for. Eight to ten hours is normal, projection in the first three hours is substantial, and the scent stays on fabric considerably longer. One or two sprays will do for most people; three is a decision you regret in an enclosed room. If you have found other rose-oud compositions too sharp or too medicinal, this is a gentler entry point into the style.
