Black Noir arrived in 2023 and belongs to the tradition Pierre Montale has been working in since he founded Mancera in Paris in 2008: dense oriental compositions built on oud, sold well below what most niche houses charge for the material. Mancera's own summary is brief and accurate, describing a masculine and charismatic fragrance where smoky woods and warm amber dominate and powerful spices soften into a deep, enveloping trail.

The note list the house publishes is unusually specific and worth reading closely. Cambodian oud, Cuban tobacco leaves, patchouli leaves and tiare blossom in the heart, over tonka beans, vanilla pods, grey amber and vetiver roots. Tiare is the odd inclusion, a Polynesian white flower, creamy and sunlit, dropped into a composition that is otherwise all smoke and leather. It does not soften the fragrance so much as give it an unexpected sweetness in the middle distance.

On skin the opening is black leather and pink pepper, sharp and slightly animalic. Tobacco follows quickly, dry and faintly sweet like a cigar wrapper rather than an ashtray. Cambodian oud runs underneath the whole thing, more resinous than barnyard, which will matter to anyone who has been put off by rawer ouds. Then it settles into vanilla, tonka and amber, and that is where most people fall for it. The smoke never leaves, but it warms.

This is an evening fragrance and a winter one. A Cape July night suits it exactly. It would be a great deal in summer humidity. It skews masculine in the classical sense but is worn by women who like leather and tobacco, and Mancera sells it as unisex.

Longevity and projection are enormous, which is the Mancera signature. Twelve hours is unremarkable and the trail is substantial for the first several. Restraint is the correct approach: one or two sprays, and keep it off scarves you plan to wear again soon. Mancera offers it in 60 ml and 120 ml. Product pages here carry no nose at all. The work is usually laid at Pierre Montale's door, which squares with the house's own claim that its expertise comes from a master of oriental perfumery.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Black Noir is a bold, unapologetic oriental that leads with polished black leather and pink pepper before settling into a rich core of tobacco and Cambodian oud — dry, resinous, and genuinely luxurious. The tiare flower softens what could otherwise be a very stern composition, while vanilla and tonka round off the edges in the drydown, leaving a warm, amber-laced trail that lingers for hours. Performance is serious — heavy sillage and exceptional longevity mean one or two sprays is more than enough. It's best reserved for cooler months and evening occasions, where its dark sensuality can really breathe without feeling oppressive. If you're drawn to leathery, smoky orientals with real depth and presence, this one deserves a place on your radar.
