Burberry Her

Burberry Her arrived in 2018 with a specific brief: to smell like London, and to smell young. The composition is credited to Francis Kurkdjian, one of the most decorated perfumers working today, the man who made Jean Paul Gaultier Le Mâle in 1995 at the age of twenty-five, later founded his own house, and now directs perfume creation at Dior. Her is a good demonstration of his commercial instinct. It is a berry fragrance, which in 2018 was not the obvious move, and it became one of the brand's most recognisable modern releases.

The opening is a mass of red and dark fruit: strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, sour cherry and blackcurrant, with mandarin and lemon cutting through them. It ought to be a mess and it is not, because the fruit is treated as a single accord rather than as separate notes, and the sourness of the cherry and blackcurrant keeps it from reading as sweets. The heart is thin by design, violet and jasmine mostly present to provide a powdery floral bridge, and the real substance sits underneath. Musk, vanilla, cashmeran, amber, oakmoss and patchouli give it a soft, slightly dusty, woody-sweet base considerably more grown-up than the opening suggests. That contrast is the whole trick: someone smelling it across a table gets sweet fruit, while someone close enough gets powder and wood.

It is a young fragrance and wears best that way. Autumn and cooler months flatter it, since in serious heat the berries can turn jammy, and it is more of an evening and weekend scent than an office one. On a Cape winter night it does very well indeed.

Performance is good rather than remarkable, at six to eight hours, with a strong fruity first hour and then a much closer musk-and-vanilla drydown. It does noticeably better on fabric than on bare skin.

A sourcing caveat belongs here. Burberry's beauty pages are not openly crawlable, so the pyramid above is drawn from the note breakdown published consistently across independent fragrance references, and none of the house's own phrasing is quoted. Treat the Kurkdjian credit the same way: it is the attribution repeated everywhere rather than a line lifted from Burberry itself. If you liked the fruity-musk style of the late 2010s, this is the best-constructed example of it.
