Burberry Brit for Men

Burberry Brit for Men belongs to a very specific moment. It launched in 2004, when British fashion houses were rediscovering their own heritage and men's fragrance was turning away from marine freshness towards something warmer and spicier. Brit was one of the scents that made that turn, and it is commonly credited to the perfumer Antoine Maisondieu.

The published pyramid is ginger, cardamom, bergamot and green mandarin at the top; wild rose, nutmeg and cedar in the heart; tonka bean, grey musk, cedar and patchouli at the base. On skin the ginger is the signature, bright and slightly fizzy and more crystallised than raw, and it sits over a spiced core unusually soft for a masculine of that era. The wild rose is well hidden but does its job, giving the middle a rounded floral quality that keeps the spices from turning dusty. The base is where it earns its following, with tonka and musk producing a warm, faintly sweet, almost comforting drydown that reads as approachable rather than assertive.

It is a cold-weather fragrance and a straightforwardly likeable one. A Cape winter, dinners, the office, weekends: it fits almost anywhere except a hot afternoon, where the tonka can become heavy. It is a men's fragrance in intent and largely in practice.

Two honest caveats. First, Burberry no longer runs its own beauty business, since the licence has sat with Coty since 2017, and Brit no longer occupies the front of the brand's line-up the way it once did, so it is more often found through fragrance specialists than through Burberry itself. Second, a fragrance now more than twenty years old has necessarily been reformulated over that period to comply with changing ingredient rules, and long-term wearers consistently report that recent bottles are cleaner and slightly lighter than the mid-2000s original.

Taken on its own terms, performance is solid: six to eight hours from the eau de toilette with moderate projection in the first two, and better on knitwear than on bare skin. It remains one of the more quietly accomplished spiced woody fragrances of its generation.
