The One for Men landed in 2008, at the exact moment when men's designer perfumery was pivoting away from the aquatic freshness that had dominated the previous decade. It is commonly attributed to Olivier Polge, who a few years later would succeed his father Jacques as the in-house perfumer at Chanel, and you can hear the family instinct in it: a fragrance that behaves like tailoring rather than like a stunt. Dolce and Gabbana's own copy is brief and describes it as an aromatic woody built on basil and sandalwood, elegant and sensual with a contemporary edge. The pyramid as it is usually published fills in the rest. Grapefruit, coriander and basil open it, though the citrus is a lit fuse rather than a burst, gone within minutes. What replaces it is the part people actually buy the bottle for: ginger and cardamom, warm and slightly soapy, with orange blossom giving a powdery gleam that reads almost like clean skin. The base is amber, tobacco and cedar, and the tobacco is the sweet, honeyed, pipe-cut kind rather than an ashtray. Everything sits close together. There are no jarring transitions, no big reveal, just a slow warming that ends up smelling more expensive than it is. Its reputation as a formal-wear scent is deserved but slightly limiting. It is superb under a jacket, at a wedding, at a dinner where you want to be remembered without being identified. It is also very good in cool weather generally, and on a Highveld winter evening the amber and tobacco read as warm rather than cloying. In real summer humidity it can turn heavy fast, so a lighter hand is wise. Performance is a genuine strength. Six to nine hours is typical from the eau de toilette, with a soft, hugging projection that lasts the first two or three hours. Two sprays is usually enough; four is where it becomes the fragrance other people are wearing at you. Be aware of the family tree before you buy. Dolce and Gabbana have since built out the line with an eau de parfum and, more recently, a parfum concentration, and they are noticeably different from the original eau de toilette rather than simply stronger. Longtime wearers also report the eau de toilette as somewhat quieter than early bottles, a common outcome of the ingredient restrictions that have tightened since 2008.
