Amouage was founded in the Sultanate of Oman in 1983 by the Albusaidi family, the country's ruling dynasty, with the stated ambition of making the Gift of Kings. Four decades later Guidance is the fragrance that took the house from respected to genuinely popular, and it did so by breaking the mould Amouage had built for itself. Released in 2023 and composed by Quentin Bisch, whom the house calls a genius of the trade whose talent lies in an unquenched thirst for beauty, it is described by Amouage as a spellbinding and novel interpretation of the Amouage triad of rose, frankincense and ambergris.

The novelty is what you smell first. Instead of opening on incense, it opens on pear and hazelnut, juicy and nutty and almost like praline, with frankincense sitting underneath as a cool smoky counterweight. It is a strange and immediately recognisable combination, and it is why opinion on Guidance is so divided. Some people find it luminous, others find the nut-and-fruit accord synthetic. Sample before buying, because this is one you either fall for within thirty seconds or you do not.

The heart is more familiar territory: saffron, rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus, warm and slightly leathery, with the saffron doing the bridging work between the fruit above and the resin below. The base is sandalwood, akigalawood, cistus, ambergris and vanilla, and it is enormous, dense and salty-sweet and faintly animalic.

Amouage publishes its production detail on the product page, which is unusual and worth knowing: 25 percent oil concentration, one week of maceration and three weeks of maturation. That explains the performance. Twelve hours is routine and a heavily sprayed shirt will still smell of it after a wash. Two sprays is more than enough for an evening and one is sufficient in warm weather.

By construction it is a cold-weather, after-dark fragrance. A Highveld winter night suits it, while humid coastal heat pushes the vanilla and ambergris towards something cloying. Amouage lists three awards for it from 2024, which is a fair reflection of how quickly it found an audience beyond the house's usual buyers.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Guidance by Amouage opens with a beautifully smoky, resinous blend of palo santo and frankincense softened by a surprisingly creamy hazelnut, giving it a spiritual warmth that feels meditative rather than heavy. As it settles, saffron, rose, and jasmine add a plush, glowing heart that stops it from feeling too austere, before sandalwood, akigalawood, and ambergris pull everything into a velvety, woody finish that genuinely lasts well beyond 10 hours. The sillage is strong enough that a couple of sprays is all you need — overapplication would be a mistake with something this commanding. It's best worn in autumn or winter, either to a dinner or a formal occasion where you want to leave a lasting impression without saying a word. If you're drawn to complex, evolving orientals that feel luxurious and a little mysterious, this one is worth every rand.
