Guidance 46

Amouage was founded in Oman in 1983 by the Albusaidi family, and the house still describes its original purpose in the same words: to be the Gift of Kings. Frankincense from the south of the country, rose, and ambergris form what Amouage itself calls its triad, the three materials it returns to across four decades of releases. Guidance is the house's recent reworking of that triad, and Guidance 46 is the version taken to an extreme. Amouage credits Quentin Bisch by name, which matters, because he is one of the few contemporary perfumers whose work is recognisable across houses.

The number is not decoration. Amouage states that this carries forty-six percent fragrance oil, against fifteen to twenty percent for a typical eau de parfum and twenty to thirty for a conventional extrait, and that it is aged four weeks in total, half maceration and half maturation. You notice immediately. The opening is dense rather than bright: pear and bitter almond over rose water, with frankincense and pink pepper giving it a resinous lift and hazelnut adding a roasted, nutty warmth that is genuinely unusual in a floral.

The heart is rose, but rose thickened by saffron into something leathery and slightly medicinal, with osmanthus contributing an apricot-suede quality and jasmine sambac adding sweetness. The base is where the house signature lands: sandalwood, akigalawood and georgywood for a dry woody spine, ambergris and ambrette for salt and skin, labdanum and cypriol for smoke and earth, and vanilla smoothing the joins. It is nutty, ambery, incense-shadowed and unmistakably Amouage.

It is a formal fragrance and a cold-weather one. A Cape winter evening suits it; midsummer would be punishing. It is unisex in practice too, despite the rose, because the nuts, woods and incense pull it well away from anything conventionally pretty.

Performance is at the top of what perfumery offers. Twelve hours or more on skin is routine, the first four hours project heavily, and fabric holds it for weeks rather than days. That concentration demands discipline. One spray is a full wearing and two is close to the maximum any shared space will tolerate. Test on skin before buying, because at this strength there is no such thing as wearing it lightly.
