Hermès Twilly Eau Ginger

A twilly is the narrow silk ribbon Hermès cuts from its scarf silk, the thing you knot around a bag handle or a ponytail. The fragrance line named after it has always been the house's most deliberately young proposition, and Eau Ginger, which arrived in 2021, is the sunniest version of it. Hermès credits its own perfumer, Christine Nagel, and describes the scent as another facet of Twilly d'Hermès, striking for its sunny, joyful spirit, worn by what the house calls the Hermès girls.

The house files it as a floral, spicy and woody eau de parfum and lists three materials: candied ginger, peony and cedar. Candied is the operative word. This is not the raw, soapy ginger of a bathroom product. It is ginger with its heat rounded off and a little sugar left on the surface, closer to crystallised stem ginger than to the fresh root. Peony gives it a watery, pink, slightly transparent floral lift that keeps the sweetness from settling anywhere. Cedar closes it off dry and pale, so the finish reads woody rather than dessert-like. Compared with the original Twilly, which leans on a much sharper ginger and a heavier tuberose, this one is softer, rounder and considerably easier to wear for anyone who found the first one strident.

Who it is for: anyone who wants something cheerful without it being childish. It works in the morning, it works at a long lunch, and it holds up in warm weather better than most sweet florals because the ginger keeps a spicy edge instead of turning syrupy. It holds its brightness rather than going cloying, which is a useful quality in a Durban summer.

Performance is where expectations need managing. Despite the eau de parfum concentration this is a light, airy composition by design, and most wearers report five to six hours, the projection dropping away to very little once sixty minutes have gone. It is a scent that rewards reapplication and sits close to the skin. That is a legitimate decision by the perfumer rather than a fault, but if you measure a fragrance by how far it travels across a room, it will disappoint you.
