Mugler Alien Goddess

Thierry Mugler treated perfume the way he treated couture: as spectacle with engineering underneath. Angel, in 1992, forced an entire industry to take gourmand accords seriously and introduced the refill fountain to mainstream retail. Alien followed in 2005 as its opposite number, a solar white floral built on jasmine and amber. Alien Goddess, released in 2021, is the brightest branch of that tree, and it arrived after the house had shortened its name from Thierry Mugler to Mugler; the designer himself died in January 2022.

Mugler's own page gives the composition as Italian bergamot essence at the top, a jasmine grandiflorum superinfusion and a coconut cream accord at the heart, and a bourbon vanilla infusion with benzoin resinoid at the base. The house also states that the vanilla is sustainably grown and that every Mugler fragrance is refillable, either from in-store fountains or from refill bottles, a practice it has run since Angel. The perfumery is commonly attributed to Marie Salamagne. On skin the bergamot is brief and mostly functional; what you notice is the coconut, which is not tropical suncream but a milky, slightly powdery cream that softens the jasmine's usual sharpness. The jasmine is still recognisably itself, indolic at the edges, and it sits over a vanilla that is warm rather than sugary, with benzoin adding a resinous, faintly balsamic depth. Some listings add heliotrope and cashmeran, which explains the almondy powderiness in the drydown.

It is a warm, radiant, unmistakably feminine fragrance that works better in cool weather than the name suggests. Winter in the Cape Winelands suits it; high summer can push the coconut-vanilla into cloying territory.

Performance is strong, as it usually is with Mugler: eight hours or more, with heavy projection early. The refill system is worth taking seriously, both on cost and on waste, and it is one of the few genuine points of difference in mainstream fragrance retail. Be aware that the Alien Goddess family has expanded into Intense and Supra Florale versions with different characters, so sample before assuming they are simply stronger. Mugler has announced no reformulation of the original since launch.
