Nishane's own catalogue lists its patchouli extrait as Pachulí Kozha, in the house's Signature Collection, sold in a single 50 ml spray, and the notes given below are Nishane's own for that fragrance. Nishane's founders, Mert Güzel and Murat Katran, opened the house in Istanbul in 2012, and it is generally credited as Turkey's first niche fragrance house, which gives it a real claim to the ground between European perfumery and the mukhallat tradition of the Gulf and the Levant. This is the fragrance where that position is most obvious. The house's description is unusually direct: a voluptuous composition of patchouli, leather and incense, with honey balancing the mixture and adding to it, offered as one of the strongest patchouli perfumes available. That is not a modest claim, and it is also not wrong.

Hyacinth, ylang-ylang, armoise and camomile open it, which is a strange and clever start, green and bitter and herbal, with the ylang adding a creamy sweetness that lasts only minutes. Then patchouli takes the whole thing over, and it is dark, damp, earthy patchouli of the old school rather than the cleaned-up fractionated version most modern fragrances use. Black pepper sits beside it. The base is leather, honey and incense, the honey rich and almost animalic, the leather dry, the incense adding a smoky lift that keeps the sweetness from turning sticky.

Wear it in cold weather and after dark. It is emphatically not an office fragrance, and on a warm, humid coastal evening it can become suffocating. In a Cape winter, under a coat, it is superb. Nishane does not publish perfumer credits, so none is asserted here.

Performance is extreme even by extrait standards: twelve hours and more on skin, days on wool, and projection that fills a room from a single spray. Apply once, wait ten minutes, then decide whether you want more. You almost certainly will not.
