Prada Candy

Prada came late to fragrance and then did it entirely on its own terms. The house's scents have been shaped for two decades by Daniela Roche-Andrier, a perfumer Prada credits openly, and her work for the label, from the powdery strangeness of the original Prada amber to the transparent neroli of the Infusion line, has always sat slightly at an angle to what the market wanted. Candy, released in 2011, is the loudest expression of that habit. Prada looked at a gourmand category built on fruit and sugar and made something built on resin instead.

The architecture is deliberately spare. Prada names white musk, benzoin and a caramel accord with vanilla, and that really is most of it. What matters is the proportion. Benzoin, a balsamic resin from Southeast Asia, is used at a level that makes the fragrance dense and almost incense-adjacent, while the caramel is dark and slightly bitter rather than confectionery-sweet. Musk wraps the whole thing in a soft powdery haze that reads more like skin and clean laundry than like anything edible. The effect is warm, a little retro, and considerably stranger than the pink bottle and the ribbon lead you to expect.

Prada has consistently marketed Candy through short films rather than conventional advertising, including work directed by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, an approach that suits a fragrance more interested in character than in seduction.

It suits people who want a sweet fragrance with real weight behind it, and it is genuinely wearable by anyone. Cold weather flatters it most: a Cape winter evening, a jersey, low light. In high summer humidity the benzoin can turn heavy, so a lighter application is sensible.

Among gourmands this one is unusually well behaved. Expect eight hours or more on skin, strong projection early on, then a close caramel and resin warmth that stays until you wash it off, and considerably longer on fabric. If you have only smelled it on a paper strip, test it on skin, because the musk and benzoin need body heat to do what they do and blotter impressions of Candy are consistently misleading.
