Chanel added 1957 to Les Exclusifs in 2019, and the name is not decoration. The house explains it as a double reference: the year Gabrielle Chanel travelled to Dallas to collect the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award, which named her the most influential designer of the twentieth century, and a pairing of 19 for her birth date with 57 for the street number of Chanel's largest American boutique in New York. Chanel prints no nose on the bottle, and the tribute is commonly attributed to Olivier Polge, who took over in-house creation from his father Jacques in 2015. It is built from the least showy material in perfumery: musk.

That choice is the whole point. Where most Les Exclusifs open with a statement, 1957 opens quietly. Aldehydes and bergamot flicker for a few minutes, pink pepper and coriander give a dry snap, and then it settles almost at once into its real body. Chanel describes that body as neroli and iris over a soft, resonant cedar-musk accord, and the description holds up on skin. Orange blossom and jasmine sit in soft focus rather than blooming outright, orris lends a cool powder, and cashmeran adds a warm resinous woodiness underneath. Honey and vanilla keep the base from going sterile the way many white musks do. The result reads less like a perfume and more like clean skin at very high resolution.

It suits people who dislike being noticed but want to be remembered. Wear it to an office, a long lunch, a longer flight, or a Highveld afternoon when the heavier Exclusifs would be punishing. It is genuinely unisex; the musk-and-iris skeleton has no gender written into it, which is why the ratings skew high across both audiences.

Performance is the thing to understand before buying. This does not project. Two hours in, most wearers can no longer smell it on themselves, which leads straight to over-application. Other people can still smell it, and it holds on skin for eight hours or more, longer again on a shirt collar or scarf. Treat it as a skin scent with real stamina and it behaves beautifully. Expect a trail across a room and you will be disappointed, then you will empty the bottle chasing it. Four to six sprays is normal here, and that is the brief rather than a flaw.
