Acqua di Gioia

Acqua di Gioia arrived in 2010 as the feminine answer to Acqua di Giò, a fragrance that had defined an entire decade of masculine perfumery since 1996. That is a difficult inheritance, and Armani handled it by not copying it. Where Giò was marine and mineral, Gioia, the Italian word for joy, was built around freshwater and green citrus, a Mediterranean coastline rather than an open sea. It became one of the most successful feminine launches of its decade and it still sets the template for the bright aquatic floral. Armani describes the composition in three movements and names the materials carefully. The top is Primofiore lemon, the first-flowering Italian femminello, sharpened by crushed mint, a combination that is genuinely cold for the first minutes, more like a bruised leaf than a peel. The heart is what the house calls water jasmine, a transparent, crystalline white floral that carries none of the indolic heaviness of jasmine absolute. The base, in Armani's own words, is the signature of water drawn from the earth: cedarwood sprinkled with brown sugar and labdanum. That last part is the reason the fragrance outlasts most of its imitators. The sugar and labdanum add a soft warmth underneath all the green, so the drydown is skin-like rather than simply clean. This is a hot-weather fragrance and it makes no apology for it. On a Highveld summer morning it is close to perfect; it is equally at home on the coast, at the beach, on a plane, in an office where nobody wants to smell anybody else's perfume. It reads young without reading cheap, and it is one of the safest gifts in the Armani catalogue for exactly that reason. Performance is the trade-off. Aquatic freshness is chemically fragile, and Acqua di Gioia gives around five to seven hours with strong projection in the first hour and a close, faintly sweet skin scent after that.
