Mancera set up shop in Paris during 2008, and the man generally named behind it is Pierre Montale, who had already spent years making oud a familiar material in Europe through his first house. Mancera was the second act: less exclusively oriental, more playful, and positioned to be worn rather than collected. His daughter Amelie joined the house later and brought its artistic and photographic direction. Amore Caffe, released in 2023, is among the newest things Mancera has made and has become one of its fastest sellers.
Mancera's own description is the best summary available. The house calls it an olfactory affogato, where vanilla meets the intensity of espresso to create a warm, gourmand trail. An affogato is a scoop of ice cream with a shot of hot espresso poured over it, and that is precisely the structure. The opening is coffee, dark and roasted and genuinely bitter for the first few minutes, with amaretto adding a nutty almond edge. Then the cream arrives underneath and the temperature of the fragrance seems to drop: vanilla ice cream, soft and lactonic, with speculoos giving a cinnamon-and-caramelised-sugar biscuit note that is unmistakably Belgian. The base is vanilla pods, brown sugar and grey amber, warm and dense and slightly powdery. It is not a subtle fragrance and does not pretend to be.
It is a cold-weather scent by nature. A Highveld winter evening suits it. A February afternoon on the coast does not, unless you enjoy the smell of a coffee shop in a sauna. It works best after dark, at dinner, in a bar, in a car. It is also unisex in practice despite the sweetness, and plenty of men wear it.
Performance is the reason people buy Mancera. This behaves like an extrait in everything but name: ten to fourteen hours is normal, with heavy projection for the first four and a trail that follows you into rooms. One spray is a decision, two is a commitment, three is a mistake. It also clings to fabric, and a jacket will hold it for a week. If you have never worn a modern gourmand at this concentration, sample first, because the difference between loving this and finding it too much is often just the number of sprays.
