Bvlgari has been a Roman jeweller since 1884, when the Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari opened his shop in the city, and the house has never quite lost that goldsmith's feel for weight and finish. Man in Black, released in 2014 and widely credited to Alberto Morillas, is where that instinct turned properly dark. Bvlgari's own site now files it within a Circle of Nature running through the Bvlgari Man collection, with this bottle standing for Fire; the matte black flacon, the brand says, evokes lava stone polished by flame. The reference behind the name has always been the forge, and the fragrance behaves accordingly, molten rather than merely spicy.

It opens on rum, and it is genuinely boozy: a dark sugared spirit laced with warm spice and a dry curl of tobacco. What follows is the part that made the perfume's reputation. A leather heart arrives underpinned by iris, which lends it a powdery, cool metallic edge, and then tuberose pushes through and gives the leather a creamy, almost fleshy warmth. That white flower, rare in a men's release, is why Man in Black smells like nothing else on the mainstream shelf. The base is tonka bean, guaiac wood and benzoin, sweet and resinous with a faint smoke to it.

This is winter perfume, built for the hours after sunset, and it makes no pretence of being anything else. It suits a Highveld winter evening, when the air is dry and thin and a heavy amber reads as warmth rather than weight. Two sprays are plenty; four will fill a room and stay there.

Performance is among the strongest in the Bvlgari line, eight hours and more on skin, with projection that stays assertive through the first three. Long-term wearers report that recent batches sit a shade sweeter and a touch less animalic than the earliest ones, which is normal for a perfume a decade into production, though Bvlgari has published no reformulation notice. The house has since added a Parfum concentration to the Man in Black line, and describes the current flacon as refillable, with recycled glass and plastic in the packaging.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Bvlgari Man in Black is a dark, boozy oriental that leads with rum and spices before settling into a smooth leather and tuberose heart that feels polished rather than rough. The benzoin and tonka bean dry-down is genuinely impressive — creamy, resinous, and long-lasting in a way that justifies the price tag for fans of heavier, more sensual scents. Community consensus sits at a modest 4.1, suggesting it divides opinion, likely because that heavy sillage and bold rum opening can feel overpowering on the wrong person or in the wrong setting. Save this one for cool winter evenings, date nights, or formal occasions where a confident, room-filling scent is an asset rather than a liability — a single spray goes further than you'd expect.
