Crazy for Oud

Mancera does not name perfumers for individual fragrances, and it does not here. What the house does publish is its origin, a Paris start in 2008. The founder is generally identified as Pierre Montale, the specialist whose other label turned oud into a European commodity. Crazy For Oud, from 2019, is Mancera at its most unashamedly rich.

The official description sets out the intention clearly enough. Oud blends with the softness of magnolia to create a floral, sensual harmony, and deep woods and vanilla add warmth, forming a creamy trail. The note list is where it gets genuinely interesting. Alongside Bulgarian rose, white magnolia, violet and patchouli leaves, Mancera lists tiramisu notes. The house is explicit about the dessert reference, which is not something most oud fragrances would ever admit to.

That is precisely how it wears. Oud and leather open with a dark, slightly animalic weight, but within fifteen minutes a creamy coffee-and-cocoa sweetness rises through the wood, and rose sits between the two holding them together. Magnolia keeps the floral side from turning old-fashioned. The base is vanilla pods, oakmoss and white musk over woody notes, and it is soft where the opening was hard, so the whole arc runs from severe to comforting.

It is a night fragrance and a cold-weather one. Worn to a winter dinner it works beautifully. Worn on a humid Durban afternoon it will be too much for the room and probably for you as well. Anyone who likes gourmand ouds, meaning the dessert-adjacent end of the category rather than the smoky end, will recognise the territory within seconds.

Performance is very strong, as it is across the Mancera range. Expect ten hours and more on skin, the first few projecting heavily, and expect it to sit on a scarf considerably longer than that. This is a two-spray fragrance. It comes as an eau de parfum in the two standard formats, the 120ml flacon and the smaller one, and Mancera files it under Oriental.
