Gabrielle Essence
Gabrielle Chanel, launched in 2017, was the first entirely new women's pillar the house had built since Chance in 2003, and Olivier Polge approached it in a way Chanel had not tried before: instead of reproducing a real flower, he assembled an imaginary one from four white blossoms. Gabrielle Essence, which followed in 2019, keeps that conceit and turns the volume up. It opens fruity, with peach, blackcurrant and citrus giving a juicy, almost jammy first ten minutes, which is the least Chanel-like part of the fragrance and the part that fades fastest. Then the flowers arrive together rather than in sequence, creamy and warm, with a coconut-milk softness threading through the tuberose and ylang-ylang. Sandalwood, vanilla and a rounded musk close it, and the drydown is where it earns its keep: skin-warm, slightly powdery, and much less sweet than the opening promises.
It is an evening fragrance in warm weather and an all-day one in cool weather. On a Highveld winter evening it holds beautifully; in February humidity the fruit at the top can turn cloying for the first half hour, so spray less and let the flowers do the work.
Performance is the practical reason to choose Essence over the original. As an eau de parfum with tuberose and sandalwood carrying the base, it runs seven to nine hours on most skin, with generous projection for the first two or three and a close, creamy trail afterwards. Two sprays is usually enough and three is a decision. If you find the original Gabrielle too clean and too polite, this is the corrective; if you love the original precisely for its restraint, Essence may feel like it is trying harder than you want it to.
