Hermès Terre d'Hermès Parfum

Most men's fragrances aim at a mood. Terre d'Hermès aims at a material, and the material is the ground itself. The line began in 2006 as an eau de toilette and became, quickly and slightly unexpectedly, one of the very few modern masculines that critics and shop floors agree on. The Parfum arrived in 2009, Jean-Claude Ellena's own concentration of his own idea, and Hermès frames it exactly as it frames the original: a man in dialogue with the ground beneath his feet rather than with anybody watching him. The house sells it as Terre d'Hermès Pure Parfum, which is the name to use at a counter.

The house publishes a spare note list for the Parfum, grapefruit, shiso and cedar, and that austerity is the point. Fuller breakdowns add orange at the top, a flint accord through the middle and oakmoss and benzoin below. The flint is the detail everybody remembers: a dry, struck-stone mineral effect sitting between the citrus and the wood that stops the fragrance smelling like either a cologne or a cedar chest. In the Parfum the grapefruit is darker and shorter-lived than in the toilette, the shiso adds a green and faintly peppery lift, and the cedar comes forward much earlier. It smells like warm rock, orange peel and dry timber, and it does not smell like anything else on a shelf.

Wear it for work and for cold weather. It is the rare scent that reads as competent rather than seductive, which makes it useful for interviews, client meetings and any occasion where you would prefer to be noticed slightly after the fact. Highveld winter mornings suit it particularly well, the dryness in the air agreeing with the dryness in the fragrance. In heavy summer humidity the mineral edge can turn a little sharp, so a lighter hand helps.

Performance is strong without being aggressive. Expect eight hours or more from the Parfum, with a trail that is obvious for the first two and then settles close to the skin. It outlasts the eau de toilette comfortably and pushes the woody base harder, so if you already know the original, treat this as a deepening rather than a different fragrance. The bottle, designed by Philippe Mouquet, takes its shape from a travel vanity case held in the Émile Hermès museum and carries the house's Clou de Selle detail, a reminder that this is a saddler's company first.
