Liquid Brun arrived in 2024 with no advertising budget and no celebrity face, and it spread the way perfume actually spreads now: one person smelling it on another and asking what it was. The pitch was simple. The cinnamon-vanilla warmth of a fragrance costing five times more, in a brown bottle, from a house barely three years old. Within a year South African stockists were struggling to keep it on the shelf.

Liquid Brun is French Avenue's brown-bottle gourmand, and right now it is one of the most talked-about affordable fragrances in South Africa. It opens warm and spiced, cinnamon and cardamom over a quick flash of bergamot, then settles into something closer to dessert: bourbon vanilla, praline and a soft nutty sweetness held up underneath by ambroxan and guaiac wood.

If you have smelled Parfums de Marly Althair, you will recognise the shape of this one straight away. That comparison is why it sells, and it is a fair one. The same cinnamon-and-vanilla warmth, the same creamy finish, at a fraction of the price. It is not identical. Liquid Brun is sweeter and more linear, and it loses some of the complexity in the top. But on skin, twenty minutes in, most people would struggle to tell them apart.

This is a cold-weather fragrance. Wear it to dinner, to the office in July, on a date. In Johannesburg heat it turns cloying quickly, so go light. Two sprays is plenty and four is too many. The brand quotes eight to twelve hours, and in cooler weather it does sit on skin for most of a working day, with the sweetness fading well before the woods do.

French Avenue is a young Dubai house, founded in 2021 under the Fragrance World umbrella, that builds its range around recognisable designer shapes. Liquid Brun is the one that made the name, and local stock moves fast enough that several South African stores list it as sold out or on backorder at any given time.

For scale on the comparison everyone makes: the Parfums de Marly original runs upwards of R6,000, so this is a choice between two very different budgets rather than two similar bottles.

Where to buy it, as at August 2026: Takealot marketplace sellers list the 100ml eau de parfum from about R415, and it holds 4.6 out of 5 there from more than 150 buyers, which makes it the cheapest sensible way in. Rio Perfumes has it at R750. Dubai Perfumes SA has listed it at R649, Pulse Perfumery carries the 150ml Limited Edition Extrait at R790, and DOT MADE stocks the 100ml plus 5ml samples without showing a price online. This end of the market moves fast, so check price and stock before you order.

✍️ Did You Know?

  • French Avenue launched in 2021 in Dubai and sits under the Fragrance World group
  • Liquid Brun is widely worn as an affordable stand-in for Parfums de Marly Althair
  • The brand quotes 8 to 12 hours of wear, which does hold up in cooler weather
  • Sweeter and more linear than the fragrance it is compared to, with less going on in the opening
  • Often assumed to be an Ombre Nomade clone. It is not: the comparison that holds is Parfums de Marly Althair
  • The name simply describes the juice. It is a deep liquid brown, which stands out on a shelf full of clear and amber bottles.
  • It is one of very few Dubai-house gourmands that men and women in South Africa buy in roughly equal numbers.
  • Local stock is unreliable. At the time of writing several South African stores had it listed as sold out or on backorder.
  • South Africans rate it 4.6 out of 5 across more than 150 Takealot reviews, which makes it one of the best-reviewed Dubai-house fragrances on the platform.
  • It sold well enough that French Avenue released a 150ml Limited Edition Extrait de Parfum in 2025, a louder and longer-lasting version of the same spicy vanilla.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Liquid Brun is the kind of fragrance that makes you understand why it sells out — warm cinnamon and cardamom open over a breath of bergamot before the whole thing melts into bourbon vanilla and praline, rich and unapologetically sweet. It wears closer to dessert than perfume, and that is precisely the point. Performance is genuinely impressive in cooler weather, sitting on skin for most of a working day with the woods outlasting the sweetness, but in Joburg summer heat it turns heavy fast, so save it for winter evenings and keep your hand light — two sprays is the sweet spot. The Parfums de Marly Althair comparison is everywhere for good reason; Liquid Brun shares the same cinnamon-and-vanilla silhouette at a fraction of the price, though it is sweeter and more linear with less complexity in the opening. If you want an affordable gourmand that punches well above its price point for date nights and winter office days, this one earns its reputation.
