Luna Rossa Black Eau de Parfum

Luna Rossa takes its name from Prada's America's Cup sailing challenge, and the earliest fragrances in the line played the nautical theme fairly straight. Luna Rossa Black, released in 2018, deliberately does not. Prada positions it as an urban fragrance rather than a maritime one, and its structure is closer to a modern fougère than to anything blue. Prada credits the composition to Daniela Andrier, the perfumer behind much of the house's fragrance identity — a useful credit to have, since most designer houses decline to name anyone at all.

The house publishes a compact pyramid. Bergamot and angelica open it, and angelica is the interesting choice: musky, faintly bitter, slightly medicinal, it gives the citrus opening a strange dry edge rather than a clean one. The heart is patchouli and coumarin, and this is the engine of the fragrance. Prada's own key-note summary — fresh patchouli, a magnetic coumarin presence, wild musk — describes the effect well. The patchouli here is the modern, cleaned-up kind rather than the earthy hippie material, and the coumarin brings that soft almond-and-hay sweetness that makes fougères feel comforting. Underneath, woody amber and musk give a smooth, slightly powdery finish. The overall impression is of something laundered, warm and faintly sweet — the smell of a very good coat rather than of the sea.

That makes it unusually versatile. It is comfortable at the office, at dinner and in transit, and it handles both a Cape winter and a mild summer evening without complaint. Prada frames it as masculine, and it reads that way, though the sweetness is soft enough that it is not rigidly so.

Performance is good rather than enormous: eight hours or so on skin, with a moderate trail that stays within arm's length after the first hour and lingers noticeably on fabric. Three sprays is a reasonable full dose. It is the kind of fragrance people ask about at close range rather than across a room, which for a daily signature is often the more useful quality.
