Sì Passione

Sì launched in 2013 and became the most commercially important feminine fragrance Giorgio Armani has ever had. Sì Passione, from 2017, is not a stronger version of it but a rewrite: where the original was a soft blackcurrant chypre built around a muted rose, Passione turns the volume up on the fruit and the flowers and takes out most of the restraint. Armani sells it to the woman it calls passionate, feminine and free, which is marketing language, but the composition does support the shift — this is a bolder, redder, more insistent fragrance than its parent.

Armani's own listing keeps to three materials. A blackcurrant nectar accord opens it, described by the house as juicy and pulpy, and that is exactly how it reads — dark, slightly tart fruit with pear alongside, lifted by pink pepper and a flash of grapefruit that keeps the first minutes sharp rather than sugary. The heart is jasmine absolute, which Armani calls luminous and hyper-feminine, sitting on rose with a creamy heliotrope softness and, in the widely documented full pyramid, a tropical sweetness from pineapple. The base is cedarwood essence, which the house credits with giving the fragrance maturity and character, supported by vanilla, patchouli and amberwood. That woody-vanilla foundation is what stops the fruit becoming juvenile.

It is an evening and cool-weather fragrance more than a daytime one, and it is comfortable on a Cape winter night in a way it is not in February humidity, where the vanilla base thickens. It reads unmistakably feminine and skews younger than the original Sì, though plenty of people wear it across both.

Performance is strong: eight hours or more is usual, with generous projection in the opening two and a warm woody-vanilla close. Two sprays is enough for most rooms. No perfumer is credited anywhere on Armani's product pages, so any name you find attached to this one deserves appropriate caution. Note also that Armani has built out a substantial Sì Passione sub-family, including Éclat de Parfum and an Eau de Parfum Intense, and these are meaningfully different compositions rather than sizes of the same thing.
