Guerlain has been making perfume since Pierre-Francois-Pascal Guerlain opened his first boutique on rue de Rivoli in 1828, and the house still treats its perfumers as authors. Its own creators page names the lineage plainly: Aime Guerlain, described by the house as the father of modern perfumery; Jacques Guerlain, responsible for the Guerlinade, the signature accord Guerlain has called its own since 1921; Jean-Paul Guerlain; then Thierry Wasser, appointed master perfumer in 2008; and Delphine Jelk, who joined the house in 2014 and was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2021. Tobacco Honey, from 2023, is Jelk's, and Guerlain credits her by name. It belongs to L'Art et la Matiere, the collection the house describes as olfactory masterpieces born of an artistic emotion left in a Guerlain perfumer's memory. Rather than a pyramid, Guerlain publishes a description: an ambery tobacco accord enveloped in vanilla, tonka bean and sesame, lifted by the brightness of honey, sharpened by aniseed and clove, and finished on a woody base combining creamy sandalwood with oud. On skin that translates into one of the more literal fragrances in the range. Honey arrives first and it is real honey, waxy and faintly sour at the edges rather than sugar-sweet, with anise and clove giving it a medicinal snap that keeps it from being cloying. The tobacco underneath is dried leaf, sweet and slightly dusty. Sesame is the odd, clever touch: it adds a toasted, nutty warmth that makes the whole thing smell edible without ever tipping into dessert. The oud is used with restraint, more shadow than statement, and sandalwood rounds off the finish. This is cold-weather perfume. A Karoo evening once the sun has dropped, or any winter night, is where it makes sense; in real heat the honey can turn syrupy. It is listed as shared, and it genuinely wears that way, though its density suits confident wearers of any gender. Performance is excellent, as it should be at this level. Eight to twelve hours is normal, heavy while the opening lasts, then a long, close, sweet-woody tail. One spray is a decision; three is a room. The bottle is the classic Guerlain quadrilobe presentation used across L'Art et la Matiere, and Guerlain lists it as a current, in-production fragrance rather than a limited edition.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Tobacco Honey is one of those quietly confident orientals that earns its place in a serious collection — honey and tobacco open with a golden, slightly smoky warmth that feels polished rather than sweet for sweetness's sake. As it develops, dried fruits and spices add a chewy, textured depth before sandalwood, patchouli, and amber settle into a creamy, resinous dry-down that genuinely lasts the distance at 8 to 12 hours. It's the kind of scent that rewards a light hand, so if you're wearing it to a dinner or an evening out, two or three sprays is all you need to leave a quietly memorable trail. Sophisticated, sensual, and grown-up in the best possible way, it suits anyone drawn to sweet-smoky orientals that feel luxurious without tipping into excess.
