Tonka Cola

Cola as a perfume note is a joke that keeps not being one. It is essentially a citrus-and-spice accord - lemon, orange, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla - which is roughly what the original soft drink was built from, so a perfumer working with it is really working with an old-fashioned spiced cologne wearing a modern disguise. Mancera released Tonka Cola in 2022 and described it as a bold fragrance blending the effervescence of an iconic drink with the warm, sweet notes of tonka bean.

The opening genuinely fizzes. Sicilian lemon and a cherry note sit over cinnamon and nutmeg, and for the first ten minutes it reads as cola from a glass bottle rather than a can. Then Indonesian patchouli leaf and orange blossom pull it sideways into something more perfume-like, and the base takes over: Brazilian tonka bean, vanilla, benzoin and labdanum, warm and balsamic and only faintly powdery. What starts as a novelty ends as a competent amber-gourmand, which is why it has held its audience.

It is unisex, it skews young, and it is unmistakable at close range. A night out, a summer evening on the Highveld once the heat has broken, a braai that has gone on too long. It is not an office fragrance and it is not trying to be. Expect people to ask what it is, and expect roughly half of them to say it smells like something they drank as a child.

Mancera performance applies: eight to ten hours is normal, projection is strong in the first three, and it stays on clothing well beyond that. Two sprays is a full wearing. The house opened in Paris during 2008, is generally traced to Pierre Montale, and now has his daughter Amelie shaping its artistic direction. No perfumer credit for Tonka Cola appears on its own site, so any specific name you see attached to it elsewhere is attribution rather than confirmation. If you want the cola idea without the sweetness taking over entirely, this is the version that keeps the spices legible longest.
