When Olivier Polge took over as Chanel's in-house perfumer in 2015, one of the questions facing him was what to do with the house's biggest modern success. Coco Mademoiselle had appeared in 2001, under his father Jacques. Olivier, who had joined the house in 2013 to work alongside him, answered in 2018 with Intense. It is a genuine reinterpretation rather than a concentration exercise, and the difference is obvious from the first minute.

Chanel's own account of what changed is direct: an extreme, luminous concentration of patchouli, wrapped in a blend of tonka bean and vanilla from Madagascar. In practice the original's busy citrus opening is simplified to Sicilian orange, Calabrian bergamot and lemon. Cleaner, less fizzy, gone sooner. The floral heart is trimmed too. Rose and jasmine remain, with a soft fruity edge, but the mimosa and ylang-ylang that gave the original its yellow warmth are dialled back. What you are left with is a fragrance that reaches its base faster and stays there longer.

And the base is the point. Patchouli here is deeper and darker than in the original, less powdery and more resinous. Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean give it a creamy, almost boozy sweetness. Labdanum adds a leathery amber, and white musk keeps the whole thing from becoming heavy-handed. Chanel classifies it as ambery, and Intense earns that label in a way the original only half does.

Season matters more here than with the original. This is cold-weather wear and it comes alive on a Cape winter evening, in restaurants and theatres and anywhere with a coat involved. In summer heat it can turn dense and sugary very quickly. One spray in warm weather, and apply to clothing rather than pulse points if you want it to behave.

Performance sits at the top of Chanel's mainstream range. Ten to twelve hours is routine, projection is strong for the first four, and it will survive a wash cycle on a scarf. If you already own and like the original, this is not a replacement so much as its winter counterpart. Try it on skin before buying blind, because the two smell more different than the shared name suggests.

✍️ Did You Know?

  • It is commonly attributed to Olivier Polge, son of Jacques Polge, who joined Chanel in 2013 and became the house's in-house perfumer in 2015, three years before this 2018 release
  • Chanel's own wording explains what changed: an extreme, luminous concentration of patchouli, warmed by tonka bean and vanilla from Madagascar
  • Chanel files both the original and the Intense as ambery fragrances rather than florals
  • Chanel names Sicilian orange and Calabrian bergamot in the opening, a narrower and more specific citrus set than the original's four-note top
  • The house later added L'Eau Privee to the same line, described as an eau pour la nuit, so there are now three distinct readings of Coco Mademoiselle in the range

AI Review Summary

Synthesised from fragrance data

Coco Mademoiselle Intense takes everything you love about the original and turns up the dial — the citrus opener of orange, bergamot and mandarin is still there, but it quickly gives way to a warmer, more enveloping heart of rose and jasmine before a deeply satisfying base of patchouli, vanilla and sandalwood takes hold. It's unashamedly bold and seductive, with a sillage that announces your arrival and longevity that carries you well through an entire evening. Community ratings suggest it divides opinion — those who find the original too fresh tend to love this, while wearers who prefer lighter fragrances may find the patchouli-vanilla combination a touch heavy. Save this one for autumn and winter evenings — a dinner date, a year-end function, or any occasion where you want to leave a proper impression rather than a whisper.
