Fabulous Yuzu

Yuzu is a Japanese citrus that smells like grapefruit and mandarin argued and then reconciled - sharper than either, with a floral edge no lemon has. It is expensive, it is difficult to hold in a formula, and it is the reason Fabulous Yuzu stands slightly apart from the rest of Mancera's 2022 output. The Paris house, dated to 2008 and generally credited to Pierre Montale, describes it plainly enough: a burst of sparkling yuzu, vibrant and sunny, a tangy freshness inspired by Japanese gardens that softens into a light, luminous sweetness.

That description is honest about the structure. The first twenty minutes are all citrus - yuzu with lemon and mandarin behind it, and a small amount of cinnamon that reads as warmth rather than spice. Then it changes course entirely. Vetiver root comes up green and slightly earthy, mimosa and French jasmine add a powdery floral haze, and the base settles into Mysore sandalwood, tonka bean and vanilla. The last two hours are creamy and soft, with almost no citrus left. People who buy it for the opening are sometimes surprised by where it ends up; people who like both halves consider that the point.

This is a hot-weather fragrance with a cool-weather ending, which makes it more versatile than most citrus. It works for a Durban summer day and still holds together in an air-conditioned office at night. It is fully unisex, and it is one of the few Mancera bottles you can wear to a meeting without anyone else having an opinion about it.

On performance, be realistic. The bright phase is short - an hour at most, as it always is with real citrus - but the sandalwood-vanilla base runs six to eight hours and sits close to the skin. That is a weaker showing than Mancera's heavy ambers and oud compositions, so if you know the house through its louder work, calibrate expectations downward. No nose is published for it. Pierre Montale is the name commonly given, and nothing in the house's own material confirms that.
