A twilly is the narrow silk band Hermès customers tie around a bag handle or a wrist, and the fragrance named after it was aimed at the people who wear them that way. Hermès is direct about the brief: Christine Nagel created Twilly d'Hermès in 2017 for a tribe of young women who reappropriate the house codes rather than inheriting them. It was Nagel's first major pillar launch after taking over as house perfumer, and it did something Hermès had not really done before, a deliberately youthful and slightly cheeky feminine, sold in a lantern-shaped bottle finished with a hand-tied silk ribbon. The composition is built on three materials the house names itself: candied ginger, tuberose and milky sandalwood. That first accord is the trick. Ginger arrives bright and fizzy with bitter orange and bergamot alongside it, so the opening reads spicy-citrus rather than sugary, and it cuts the tuberose before the tuberose has a chance to become imposing. The heart is white floral without the wax and the funeral-flower weight, tuberose lifted by orange blossom and jasmine, kept transparent. Then sandalwood and vanilla arrive underneath, creamy but restrained, and the whole thing settles into something soft, warm and faintly milky on skin. It is a floral for people who usually find florals heavy. Twilly polarises, and it is worth knowing why: the ginger-tuberose combination reads as playful and modern to some and as strident for the first ten minutes to others. Give it that ten minutes before deciding. It suits daytime, summer, and anything informal, a Cape Town brunch or a long Saturday, and it is one of the few Hermès feminines that does not feel like it needs an occasion. Performance is good for the style. The eau de parfum runs six to eight hours with moderate projection in the first couple, then hugs the skin pleasantly. It layers well with unscented body cream if you want the sandalwood to hold longer. Hermès has since built a small family around it, including Eau Poivrée and Eau Ginger, so if the original opening is too sharp for you there are variations from the same perfumer worth smelling.
