Red Tobacco became one of Mancera's signature scents almost by accident - a spiced tobacco built for maximum output that developed a reputation as one of the loudest fragrances in the niche market. This Intense reading, from 2023, takes that already forceful composition and pushes the concentration and the smoke further. Mancera's own catalogue currently lists the standard Red Tobacco as spiced tobacco, oud, vanilla and amber; the Intense version is not presented separately on the house's site, so treat the name as it appears on the bottle rather than as an official sub-line.
The opening is dense: oud, cinnamon, saffron, nutmeg and incense arriving together, with a pear note that softens the first few minutes and then vanishes. The heart is where the tobacco does its work - a dark, sticky pipe-tobacco accord threaded with leather, patchouli, vetiver and a little jasmine. Where the original leans sweet, this one leans smoky and resinous. The base is vanilla, musk, sandalwood, guaiac wood and ambergris, and it is thick rather than powdery. Nothing about it is subtle, and it does not pretend otherwise.
This is a winter fragrance and an evening fragrance. A Cape winter night, a fireplace, a bar. In Highveld summer heat it becomes genuinely overwhelming, and the spices can read as harsh rather than warm. Wear it when the air is cold enough to carry it.
Performance is the whole argument. Twelve hours is routine, projection is heavy for the first four to five, and it will still be on your jacket next week. One spray. Possibly half a spray. This is the category of fragrance where restraint is not modesty but courtesy, and the most common complaint about Red Tobacco in any form comes from people who oversprayed and then could not escape it. No perfumer credit is published for it. The house began trading in Paris during 2008 and Pierre Montale is the name commonly attached to its output.

Spray the heavier scent first, then the lighter one on top. Start with two scents — more than three quickly becomes muddled. Always test on skin first.
AI Review Summary
Synthesised from fragrance data
Intense Red Tobacco opens with a dramatic burst of cinnamon, saffron and smoky oud that announces itself well before you've entered the room — it's bold, unapologetically dense, and not for the faint-hearted. On skin it deepens into a rich leather and tobacco heart with patchouli and vetiver keeping things earthy and grounded, before vanilla, sandalwood and ambergris soften the edges into a warm, resinous dry-down that genuinely lasts all day and into the night. Despite its impressive performance and complex note list, the community rating sits at a modest 4.6/10, suggesting that for some the sheer intensity tips over from compelling into overwhelming — so if you're new to oud-tobacco fragrances, approach with caution. This one belongs firmly in cooler months and evening occasions; save it for a winter dinner or date night where heavy sillage is a feature rather than a liability.
