Jean Paul Gaultier
Le Male Le Parfum
Jean Paul Gaultier dressed his famous sailor in a gold uniform for this one, and the scent matches the promotion. Cardamom and iris give a suave, powdery polish to the familiar Le Male DNA before a vanilla-woods base takes over for the night shift. It's less sugary than Ultra Male, more refined than Elixir, and arguably the most elegant thing the sailor has ever worn — a cold-weather compliment machine that works from boardroom to bar.
In 1995 Jean Paul Gaultier launched Le Male, a fragrance in a blue torso bottle wearing a sailor's striped marinière, packed in an industrial tin can. It was composed by Francis Kurkdjian, who was in his mid-twenties at the time and largely unknown; he went on to co-found Maison Francis Kurkdjian in 2009 and to become Dior's perfume creative director in 2021. Le Male turned into one of the best-selling masculines ever made, and it has anchored a family that now includes Le Male Le Parfum, Le Male Elixir and Le Male Elixir Absolu.
Le Male Le Parfum, released in 2020, is the version that took the original somewhere genuinely new rather than simply louder. Gaultier's own listing is unusually spare: cardamom on top, lavender and iris at the heart, vanilla in the base, classified as amber woody and rated three out of five on the house's own intensity scale. Quentin Bisch and Nathalie Gracia-Cetto are the names commonly attached to it.
What it smells like is the original's lavender-and-vanilla DNA rebuilt with the mint and the barbershop sharpness stripped out. Cardamom opens it green and slightly soapy, then iris does something the 1995 formula never did: it makes the middle powdery, cool and faintly cosmetic, like face powder over warm skin. Underneath, the vanilla is dense and ambery rather than sugary, with woody notes keeping it from becoming a dessert. The result is smoother, rounder and more adult than Le Male, and considerably easier to wear in company.
It is a cold-weather scent by design. On a Highveld winter evening the iris and vanilla sit beautifully; in high summer humidity the sweetness thickens.
Performance is excellent and is a large part of why it is so widely recommended: ten hours or more is normal, with strong projection for the first three and a trail that stays in a car long after you have left it. Two sprays. The line has since been extended with the Elixir concentrations, which push further into vanilla and honey; Le Parfum sits between the original eau de toilette and those, and remains in current production.

AI Review Summary
Synthesised from fragrance data
Le Male Le Parfum is the bolder, darker evolution of a classic, leading with spicy cardamom and a touch of herbal artemisia before settling into a creamy iris and vanilla heart that feels seductive without tipping into sweetness. The leather and benzoin base give it a properly grown-up, resinous edge that separates it from lighter flankers in the Le Male lineage. Performance is genuinely impressive — expect heavy sillage and a solid 12-plus hours on skin, so a light hand with the sprayer is all you need. It's best worn in cooler months or for evening occasions like a dinner date or a night out, where that warm, enveloping presence really earns its place. The man who'll love this most is someone who wants a confident, long-lasting signature that feels polished rather than loud.
