Nishane Suede et Safran Extrait de Parfum

Suède et Safran comes from Nishane's Signature Collection, and the house's description of it is unusually concrete: the feeling of a tailored leather jacket spiced with saffron from Iran and ambrette seed from India. Nishane names the countries because the sourcing is part of the point. This is an Istanbul house working with materials that moved along the same routes the city was built on, and a saffron leather is about as direct a statement of that geography as perfumery allows. The structure Nishane publishes is short and deliberate. Ambrette seed and saffron open it; suede and ginger form the heart; musk and leather close it. Ambrette is the key material and the reason the fragrance does not smell like most leathers on the shelf. It is a botanical musk, warm and slightly boozy, with a skin-like quality that makes the opening feel intimate rather than sharp. Saffron does its usual work, metallic and leathery and faintly medicinal, and the ginger cuts through it with a dry heat rather than a citrus lift. The suede accord is soft and napped rather than tarry: there is no birch-tar smoke here and no motorcycle jacket. What you get is closer to the inside of a glove, powdery and warm and quietly animalic, and much softer than the note list suggests. That softness is what makes it wearable. It is comfortable at close range, which is not something you can say about most saffron leathers, and it works as well on a shirt at the office as it does at dinner. Cooler months suit it, and on a still Highveld winter evening the musk sits beautifully. Unisex in the real sense, since the ambrette pulls it away from any obvious gender. Performance is solid but not enormous. The extrait concentration gives roughly six to nine hours, with projection that is moderate in the first hour and close after that; this is a fragrance designed to be discovered rather than announced. Nishane lists it in a 50 ml spray. As with the rest of the range, no perfumer appears on the listing.
