Sì Intense

Sì was Giorgio Armani's biggest feminine launch in years when it appeared in 2013, and the name was the whole idea: the Italian yes, a word Armani framed as agreement on one's own terms rather than compliance. Cate Blanchett fronted it, and the campaign did as much as the juice to fix its identity as grown-up, self-possessed and deliberately unfussy. Sì Intense followed in 2014 and its job was to take the original's blackcurrant-and-vanilla idea and press down on it. Armani publishes no perfumer credit for it; the name commonly attributed is Julie Massé, and it should be read as attribution rather than as a house statement. The composition opens on blackcurrant and cassis, sharpened by mandarin and bergamot and softened by freesia, tart and slightly green rather than the sugary berry the description suggests. May rose sits at the centre with osmanthus and neroli beside it; the osmanthus is what gives the heart its apricot-suede quality, and artemisia adds a bitter herbal edge that keeps the fruit honest. The base is where Intense earns the name: vanilla and patchouli, reinforced by ambroxan and woody notes, producing the modern chypre-adjacent drydown that Sì is known for. It is a warmer, denser, more resinous reading of the original, with less fruit, more amber and longer legs. One point of honesty. Armani has extended and revised the Sì family repeatedly since 2013, and the 2014 Intense is not always present in the current line-up; the house's own listing shifts by market. If a particular bottle matters to you, check the year and the exact name on the box, because Sì, Sì Eau de Parfum Intense and Sì Passione are three different propositions. It is an autumn and winter fragrance for adults, and it dresses up easily. Dinner in a Cape winter suits it a great deal better than a January afternoon, when the vanilla and patchouli can turn syrupy. Office-wearable with a light hand, better in the evening with two sprays. Performance is a strength: eight to ten hours is normal, projection is moderate to strong for the first three, and the ambroxan base clings to fabric well past that.
