Supremacy Incense

There is a savoury shock to the first minute of Supremacy Incense that catches most people off guard. Oregano and a scattering of dry herbs arrive with bergamot in a way that smells almost culinary, green and slightly medicinal, before the fragrance decides what it actually wants to be. That decision comes quickly. Opoponax and labdanum roll in with a resinous, honeyed weight, amber warms the whole thing from underneath, and the herbal sharpness softens into something balsamic and church-like. The dry-down is smoke, and plenty of it: charred agarwood, a strip of tanned leather and earthy patchouli that keeps the sweetness in check for the rest of the wear.

This is a cold-weather, after-dark fragrance and it makes no apology for it. A Cape winter evening suits it perfectly; a humid January afternoon does not. It skews masculine and mature, and it rewards restraint, because two sprays on the chest is a presence and four is an imposition. Office wear is possible only if your office is forgiving.

Longevity is strong, comfortably eight hours plus, and the smoky base lingers on wool and leather far longer. Sillage is heavy in the first hour and then settles to arm's length, which is where it is most pleasant.

The honest part: this is widely and correctly understood as an homage to Amouage Interlude Man, and the resemblance is not a coincidence. Interlude Man opens on oregano, bergamot and pimento, moves through opoponax, amber and incense, and dries down to leather, oud and patchouli. Supremacy Incense follows that map almost note for note. What differs is texture and refinement. Interlude Man has a dense, almost impenetrable smoke and a raw-material quality that makes it feel expensive; the Afnan is thinner in the middle, sweeter in the amber, and its smoke reads more like a synthetic burnt accord than smouldering resin. If you have never smelled the Amouage, this will impress you enormously. If you own Interlude Man, you will notice what is missing within ten minutes. At roughly a tenth of the Amouage price, that trade is one most buyers will accept happily, and it remains one of the better-executed Middle Eastern interpretations of a niche heavyweight.
