Tom Ford Bitter Peach

Private Blend was Tom Ford's answer to a problem he created for himself. Having built a mainstream fragrance business, he launched a separate line in 2007 with a different brief entirely: higher concentrations, more expensive materials, and no obligation to be likeable. Bitter Peach, from 2020, is one of the clearest expressions of that brief. It takes the most compromised note in commercial perfumery — peach, the note of body sprays and shampoo — and makes it opulent, boozy and slightly overripe.

Tom Ford's own listing is specific about the materials. A pêche de vigne accord and blood orange oil open it, and the phrasing on the brand's page is worth borrowing: nectar-filled fruit at its most ripe. That ripeness is the whole idea. The peach is not fresh and fuzzy but heavy, jammy, on the edge of fermenting. Davana oil sits underneath, and davana is the reason this smells alcoholic rather than merely sweet — it has a natural rum-and-apricot facet that Tom Ford leans into deliberately. Beneath that, labdanum absolute brings resinous darkness, Indonesian patchouli deepens everything, and sandalwood gives a creamy floor that keeps the fruit from turning acidic.

It is not a subtle fragrance and it should not be worn as though it were. This belongs to evenings, cool weather and small rooms. A cold Cape night at dinner works; a hot afternoon does not, because the sweetness turns cloying on skin. Two sprays is a full statement; four is an imposition on everyone around you. It is unisex in practice, though it tends to read more sensual than fresh regardless of who wears it.

Performance is where Private Blend usually justifies the price, and Bitter Peach does: eight to ten hours is normal, and the trail announces itself for the first two or three of them. The peach and blood orange burn off within the hour and what remains for most of the day is the davana-patchouli-labdanum core, warmer and darker than the opening promises. If you sample it, sample it for three hours before deciding — the first ten minutes and the fifth hour are almost different fragrances.
