Détour Noir

Few budget fragrances have earned their reputation as squarely as this one. Detour Noir opens on apple and lavender, the apple juicy but not sugary, the lavender clean and slightly medicinal, with violet and jasmine adding a soft floral haze behind them. Bergamot and mandarin brighten the first fifteen minutes. From there it moves into its real character: vanilla and patchouli push forward, creamy and rounded, while cardamom and pepper add a dry spice that stops the sweetness getting comfortable. The base is sandalwood and guaiac wood with a geranium edge, giving a smooth, powdery, faintly smoky finish.

The clone claim here is well established and worth stating plainly. Detour Noir is widely regarded as an interpretation of Parfums de Marly Layton, and it is one of the closer ones on the market. The apple-lavender-vanilla-pepper skeleton is the same. Where they differ: Layton is smoother and better blended, with a creamier sandalwood and a more expensive-feeling transition between stages, while Detour Noir has a sharper opening and is a little rougher around the joins. Most wearers put it in the 80 to 90 percent range, which for a price difference of roughly ten to one is remarkable. Performance is strong without being obnoxious. Eight to ten hours is typical, with a solid projection window for the first three or four and a comfortable skin scent afterwards. It is versatile enough for daytime office wear at two sprays and for evenings at four. The vanilla and spice give it real presence in cool air, so a Cape winter evening flatters it, though it holds up better in warmth than most sweet masculines because of that dry cardamom and pepper.
