Almond arrives first and sets the tone: sweet, marzipan-adjacent, softened by mandarin and a watery, transparent freshness that stops it turning cloying. Bergamot sharpens the edges. Underneath, the heart is busier than the label suggests, with rose and geranium supplying a slightly green floral spine while gardenia and water lily keep things airy, and a touch of civet adds a warm, faintly dirty pulse that gives the composition body rather than obvious animality. The base is the reason to own it. Laotian oud, guaiac wood and Indonesian patchouli build a dark, resinous foundation, coffee adds bitterness, and vanilla, sandalwood and amber smooth the whole thing out. Oakmoss underneath keeps it from becoming purely sweet.

On lineage: the original Detour Noir has long been recommended in fragrance forums as an affordable route to the almond-and-vanilla effect of Parfums de Marly Layton. This Exclusif version is a different proposition. The oud, coffee and guaiac push it considerably darker and drier than Layton, so while the almond-sweet opening still nods in that direction, the dry-down does not. Treat it as Layton-adjacent at the top and its own animalic woody-oud in the base, rather than a dupe you can wear expecting compliments meant for the Marly.

This is cool-weather, evening-leaning territory. A winter dinner, a night function, a long evening where you want to be remembered. It works on both men and women; the almond softens the oud enough that neither reads as gendered. In summer heat the coffee-and-oud base can turn syrupy, so it is not the bottle to reach for at a December braai.

Performance is heavy, as you would expect from that base. Eight to ten hours is normal and the first two or three are loud. Two sprays is a genuine dose here, not a suggestion. It carries a 4.1 average across roughly 480 ratings, respectable but well short of the near-universal praise its stablemates get, and the divide usually comes down to the civet and coffee, which some wearers find compelling and others find muddy. Sample before committing to a full bottle if you have not worn animalic oud before.
