Nishane Fan Your Flames Extrait de Parfum

Mert Güzel and Murat Katran built Nishane around a habit most niche labels avoid: telling you exactly which story a bottle is meant to contain. Fan Your Flames belongs to the Collection Rumi, drawn from the writing of the thirteenth-century poet Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî, and it takes its name from the line that runs, set your life on fire and seek those who fan your flames. The brand's own description is more domestic than that sounds: a night out with people you love, shisha with coconut, good conversation, better days coming.

That description is also a fair note list. Nishane opens it on coconut and rum, and both are unmistakable — the coconut dry and toasted rather than suntan-lotion sweet, the rum sharp and boozy in the first minutes. The heart is where the shisha image becomes literal: tobacco, rich and slightly sticky, wrapped in tonka bean that adds an almondy, hay-like sweetness. The base is the part that stops it collapsing into dessert, with oakmoss bringing a bitter green shade and Chinese cedarwood giving a dry, pencil-shaving woodiness underneath. Nishane files the profile as boozy, gourmand and woody, and all three are genuinely present.

Because it is an extrait de parfum, this is a cold-weather and evening fragrance almost by default. It is superb on a Highveld winter night and considerably harder to carry in coastal humidity, where the coconut-tobacco sweetness can become oppressive. One spray on clothing carries further than three on skin. It is unisex in intent and in practice.

Performance is the reason people buy Nishane at this price. Ten to twelve hours is entirely normal, and the trail is substantial for the first several — this is not a discreet fragrance and it does not pretend to be. The house offers three sizes, 15, 50 and 100 ml, and the smallest is a sensible way to test whether you want to live with something this assertive before spending on one of the larger ones.
