Roja Ahlam Pour Femme Parfum

Roja Dove opened his own house in Mayfair in 2011, after roughly two decades inside Guerlain where he became that house's Professeur de Parfums. That background explains almost everything about the Roja style: very high raw-material concentration, classical French structure, and a refusal to make anything thin. Ahlam, whose name means dreams in Arabic, is one of the quieter entries in the range and one of the harder to find. Roja's own site does not currently list it among its collections, so treat it as a limited or archive release rather than a core product.

It opens on lemon, briefly and almost as a formality, and then goes straight to the flowers. Rose de Mai is the centre, and it is the expensive kind, jammy and slightly green rather than soapy, supported by ylang-ylang, jasmine and geranium. Violet threads through the heart and pushes the whole thing towards powder. That powdery quality deepens rather than fades: orris root, almond and a soft rhubarb tartness give the middle hours a cosmetic, faintly retro elegance that recalls mid-century French perfumery more than anything contemporary.

The base is where the Arabian half of the brief shows up. Oud appears, but restrained and dry rather than medicinal, joined by saffron, sandalwood, patchouli, ambergris, vanilla and musk. The effect is a rose-oud built for someone who does not actually want to smell of oud, and it is considerably softer and more powdery than most fragrances that list agarwood.

It is an evening fragrance and a cool-weather one. A Highveld winter night, worn with something formal, is where the powder and the ambergris make sense; summer heat pushes it towards heavy.

In parfum concentration this lasts, straightforwardly. Ten to twelve hours is realistic, with a rich first three hours and then a long, close, powdery-woody drydown. Projection is moderate rather than enormous, which is typical for Roja's more classical compositions. Two things to weigh: this sits at the very top of the niche market in every sense, and because the house does not currently list Ahlam you should be more careful than usual about where a bottle comes from.
