Armani has filed Acqua di Giò Absolu under discontinued on its own United States beauty site, which settles the question more clearly than any rumour thread. The live Acqua di Giò range now runs to the eau de toilette, Profondo, Elixir and the newer Parfum and Eau de Parfum Intense. Absolu was withdrawn, so what still circulates is whatever was made before that. That is worth knowing before you fall for it.

It is worth understanding what it was. Acqua di Giò itself, launched in 1996, effectively invented the modern aquatic masculine, and every fresh blue fragrance since owes it something. Absolu, released in 2018 and commonly attributed to Alberto Morillas — the perfumer credited with the original — was the attempt to take that transparent marine idea and give it weight. Instead of making the water colder, it made the woods warmer.

The opening still reads as Acqua di Giò: sea notes, bergamot, grapefruit and lemon with a soft fruitiness from pear and apple that rounds off the citrus edge. The heart is aromatic rather than floral, with lavender, rosemary and geranium giving a dry herbal spine. The difference arrives in the base, where tonka bean, amberwood, patchouli and labdanum build something warm, slightly sweet and distinctly ambery underneath the marine top — the salt-and-skin effect that made Absolu a favourite among people who found the original too thin.

That warmth also makes it more of an evening and cool-weather proposition than the eau de toilette. It handles a Cape winter far better than midsummer, where the amber base can feel heavy against the fresh opening. It is straightforwardly masculine in positioning and in wear.

Performance was always its selling point over the original: seven to nine hours is typical, the first two carrying a moderate-to-strong cloud before it thins into a warm woody-amber skin scent for the rest of the day. If you find a bottle and you like it, buy for keeps rather than for trial, and check the batch and the seller carefully — discontinued fragrances attract careless resale. No perfumer credit appears on Armani's pages, so the Morillas name should be read as widely reported rather than officially confirmed.
